Why go

Chamonix is the birthplace of alpinism, the valley where mountaineering as a pursuit essentially began, and the Aiguille du Midi cable car lets anyone stand in the middle of that world without ever tying into a rope. In about twenty minutes it climbs to 3,842 metres — the highest cable car in Western Europe — and sets you down on a needle of rock among the glaciers and summits of the Mont Blanc massif.

The view is direct and enormous: Mont Blanc itself, the Vallée Blanche falling away, climbers roped up on the snow arête just below the station. It is a genuine high-mountain experience with none of the effort, though the altitude is real and hits some visitors hard. Pair it with the Montenvers rack railway to the Mer de Glace for a second, gentler angle on the same ice.

Go on a clear day — the whole point is the panorama — and dress far warmer than the valley suggests; it can sit below freezing at the top even in summer.

What to expect

Entirely lift-served, walkways and viewing terraces, plus a rack railway to the Mer de Glace glacier for a second high-mountain experience with no walking.

How to start

Ride the Aiguille du Midi cable car from Chamonix (20 minutes to 3,842 m) — take it slowly, the altitude hits fast from valley level. Add the Montenvers rack railway to the Mer de Glace for a second glacier view.
