Why go

Coasteering was named and popularised right here, on the Pembrokeshire coast, where guides began linking the base of the sea cliffs into a route travelled by any means the rock and water allowed: scrambling along ledges, swimming through surging channels, and jumping from height into deep water.

It is a brilliantly direct way to experience a coastline — down at sea level in the surge zone, inside caves and gullies you could never otherwise reach, with the Atlantic swell moving you around and seabirds and seals for company along a National Park shoreline.

The jumps are optional and scaled to the group, so it works for nervous first-timers and adrenaline-seekers alike. Wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet make it far safer than it looks, and few activities pack this much fun, fear and scenery into a half-day.

What to expect

A guided half-day moving along the base of the sea cliffs by whatever the coast demands: scrambling over barnacled rock, swimming across surging channels, riding the swell into caves, and jumping from ledges into deep water.

You're in a wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet throughout, and the guide reads the tide, swell and each person's nerve — jumps are always optional and sized to you. Expect cold water, bumps and scrapes, and stretches where the sea does the moving.

It's physical but not elite: reasonable swimmers and confident children from around eight can take part. The mix of fear, laughter and raw coastline is the whole appeal.

How to start

Book a guided session with a licensed local operator — coasteering is done with a guide, never solo, because it depends entirely on reading the tide, swell and exit points safely.

The season runs roughly April to October, when the water is (marginally) warmer and conditions more reliable; operators supply the wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet. Come as a competent swimmer comfortable in open water, wear old trainers you don't mind soaking, and bring warm dry clothes for afterwards.

Sessions are graded, so say upfront how much jumping you want. Base around St Davids or the north Pembrokeshire coast, the sport's home ground.
