Mallorca is the road cyclist's island.
Every winter and spring the professional peloton decamps here to train, and it's easy to see why: smooth, quiet roads, a warm off-season climate, and the Serra de Tramuntana — a spine of limestone mountains along the northwest coast laced with the kind of climbs riders dream about.
The set-pieces are famous. Sa Calobra is a serpent of switchbacks dropping to the sea and climbing back, one of cycling's iconic ascents; Cap de Formentor runs out along a dramatic cliff-lined peninsula to a lighthouse. Between them lie endless quiet loops through orchards, villages and coast, at every gradient.
The island's cycling infrastructure — bike hotels, rental fleets, café stops and mechanics — is the best in Europe, making it as easy to organise as it is beautiful to ride. For a cyclist who loves to climb, in the off-season sun, nowhere is more welcoming.
In season: Feb–May, Sep–Oct
World-class road cycling on smooth, quiet roads through the Serra de Tramuntana, with warm off-season weather and superb infrastructure.
Days range from gentle rolling loops through orchard-and-village country to serious mountain rides — the switchback drama of Sa Calobra, the cliff-edge run out to Cap de Formentor, and long climbs at every gradient. It suits capable intermediates up to strong climbers; you pick rides to your level.
Expect café stops, other cyclists everywhere in season, and hire fleets and bike hotels that make logistics effortless. Spring and autumn are ideal; summer is hot and busy with tourists. The riding is non-technical but the climbing is real.
Base in the north around Pollença, Alcúdia or Port de Sóller — the classic cycling hubs closest to the Tramuntana climbs — and ride in the shoulder seasons (roughly February–May or September–October) for the best temperatures and the pro-training atmosphere; summer is hot.
Hire a quality road bike locally (the rental fleets are excellent) or bring your own. Come with reasonable climbing fitness and low gearing for Sa Calobra and Formentor. Plan loops around café stops, carry water for the longer climbs, and start early in warmer months.
No guide needed — the roads are well-mapped and cyclist-friendly — but bike hotels can arrange routes and support.
