Sailing in Masurian Lakes
Poland
The largest interconnected lake system in Central Europe and a rite of passage in Polish summer culture.

The Krutynia is the route every Polish teenager gets taken on, and it is genuinely good. Shallow, clear, slow enough that beginners cope, and it threads through a chain of lakes and reed channels with camping at stanice along the way.
Do it in September when the school groups have gone and the birches are turning, and it stops being a rite of passage and becomes something you would come back for.
In season: May–Sep
A busy river in July, portages around a few weirs, and weather on the open lake crossings that can pin you down.
Rental with baggage transport between stanice is standard and removes most of the logistics. Book kayaks ahead for the summer holidays.
