United States

Mosquito Bay on the island of Vieques holds such a dense population of glowing dinoflagellates that it was named the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. On a dark night every paddle stroke, fish and raindrop lights up the water.
In season: Year-round · Peak: Jan–Apr
An easy guided paddle in the dark, often in clear-bottomed kayaks; swimming is no longer allowed to protect the bay. Brightness depends on the moon, so avoid the nights around full moon.

The mainland bay, reachable without the Vieques ferry
Take the ferry or a short flight to Vieques and book a licensed tour, planned for a new-moon week. Laguna Grande at Fajardo on the main island is an alternative without the trip to Vieques.
