Mountaineering in Mont Blanc Massif
France
The Goûter route to the 4,808 m roof of the Alps — glacier, snow ridge and thin air.

Aneto is the roof of the Pyrenees at 3,404 m, climbed over the shrinking Maladeta glacier and the exposed Paso de Mahoma — a genuine alpine day at the range's heart.
In season: Jun–Sep · Peak: Jul–Aug
Glacier travel with crampons and rope, then a short, very exposed ridge scramble to the cross. Crevasse risk grows as the glacier retreats; conditions and an early start are everything.
Acclimatisation day round the glacier snout and the sinkhole
The highest summit in the Pyrenees, over the glacier and the Paso de Mahoma
The southern approach, longer and far quieter
The neighbouring summit, added on from the Renclusa hut
Base at the Renclusa hut above Benasque and start before dawn. Go with a guide unless you are experienced on glaciers, and carry crampons, axe and rope.
