Why go
Uyuni is the image everyone knows — the world's largest salt flat, a blank white horizon in every direction and, for a few months after the rains, a mirror so perfect that sky and ground become the same thing. But the salt flat is only the opening. The days that follow, driving south by 4x4 into the high desert toward the Chilean border, are the better part of the trip.
Up at around 4,500 metres you cross a landscape that looks like another planet: mineral lakes stained red and green, flamingos wading in them, geyser fields visited at dawn, and hot springs to thaw out in afterwards. Nights are spent in basic refuges with no heating, which is simply part of the deal at this altitude.
Reserve entry fees apply. The dry season gives reliable driving; January to March brings the mirror effect but can restrict access to the flat itself. Pick your season for the version of this you most want to see.
