Why go

Taghazout is a point-break town, and that shapes everything about surfing here. The Moroccan Atlantic wraps long, peeling right-handers around the headlands — Anchor Point the most famous of them — which are a joy for improving surfers, while gentler beach breaks nearby give beginners somewhere friendly to start. There really is a wave and a school for every level.

The setting is a big part of the draw: a small, sun-baked fishing village that's become a surf-and-yoga hub without quite losing its rough edges — cheap, warm and sociable, an easy short-haul from Europe. You can surf in the morning, eat tagine on a rooftop in the afternoon, and do it all again the next day.

Winter is the prime season, when the North Atlantic sends its swell south, and a 3mm wetsuit is plenty in the mild water. For a reliable, low-cost surf trip within a few hours of Europe, it's very hard to beat.
