Madeira is a volcanic island that rises straight out of the Atlantic to nearly 1,900 metres, and the MIUT — the Madeira Island Ultra Trail — traces the most spectacular line across it: coast to coast over the island's mountainous spine, from Porto Moniz in the northwest to Machico in the east.
Run recreationally over a few days rather than raced in one brutal push, it links the high volcanic peaks of Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro with the island's famous levada paths — narrow trails following centuries-old irrigation channels along impossibly steep, laurel-forested slopes.
The running is genuinely hard, with enormous cumulative climbing, but the variety is the reward: cloud forest and bare summit ridges, sea views and mist-filled valleys, all on an island mild enough to run year-round.
It is one of Europe's great trail lines, on terrain that packs alpine drama into a subtropical island.
In season: Mar–May, Sep–Nov
A serious mountain trail crossing the island coast to coast, with huge cumulative ascent over volcanic peaks and along vertiginous levada paths cut into the hillsides. Expect steep, sustained climbs and descents on rocky, sometimes exposed ground, stone steps, tunnels, and narrow trails with big drops beside the irrigation channels.
Weather changes fast with altitude — sun on the coast, cloud and cold on the 1,800-metre summits. Run over three days it's a fastpacking effort demanding real hill fitness and sure footing, not a gentle jog. The payoff is Pico Ruivo, Pico do Areeiro, and a constant shift of landscapes.
Some sections reward a head for heights.
Run it in spring or autumn — March to May, September to November — for the kindest temperatures; Madeira is mild year-round, but summer can be hot and winter wet on the tops.
Break the route into three days as a fastpack, arranging accommodation or transfers along the way, or run sections as day outings from a base like Funchal. It's self-guided on generally waymarked trails, but carry a map or GPS, water, layers for the summits and a head-torch for the tunnels.
Come with strong hill-running fitness and a head for exposure on the levadas. Check trail status, as landslides occasionally close levada sections.
