Why go

Crossing the Grand Canyon on foot takes you through two billion years of geology, from the forested North Rim to the river at Phantom Ranch and up the Bright Angel Trail to the South Rim. It is one of the defining hikes of the American West, with quieter trails for those who want solitude.

Trekking specifics

Distance
38 km
Total ascent
1800 m
Max altitude
2500 m
Accommodation
Backcountry campgrounds and Phantom Ranch
Technical
Maintained trails, extreme heat and big elevation change

What to expect

Steep descents and relentless climbs of about 1,400 to 1,800 m, with heat that can pass 40 degrees at the bottom in summer. The inner canyon is far hotter than the rim, and rescues are common among the unprepared.

Routes

What the difficulty bands mean
moderate
Sustained effort or some exposure; comfort on the terrain expected.
hard
Long, technical or serious — experience and the right conditions required.
  1. South Kaibab to Phantom Ranch

    moderate

The direct descent to the river and back

  2. Rim to Rim

    hard

North Kaibab to Bright Angel, the classic crossing

  3. Rim to Rim to Rim

    hard

Both ways in a single push, for the very fit

  4. Hermit to Bright Angel loop

    hard

Three days on the quieter western trails, permit needed

How to start

Apply for a backcountry permit months ahead to camp below the rim, or book a bed at Phantom Ranch in its lottery. Walk in spring or autumn, start before dawn, and take the South Kaibab down to the river first if a full crossing is too much.
