Why go

Sawanobori means, literally, going up the stream, and it is exactly that: instead of walking a trail to the ridge, you enter a gorge at the bottom and climb the river itself — up its waterfalls, through its pools, over its water-polished slabs — in felt-soled boots that grip wet rock the way nothing else does. It is a distinctly Japanese discipline, practised for over a century, and it survives in this form almost nowhere else on earth.

The Tanigawa area and the Jōshin'etsu gorges are among its heartlands. Expect to be wet and cold for most of the day, to use ropes on the bigger falls, and to move through forest so dense the river is the only sensible way through it. Waterfalls are sacred in Japan, and climbing directly up one carries a charge that ordinary scrambling does not.

Guides are effectively essential: the routes are unmarked, escape from a gorge mid-climb is often impossible, and rain upstream can change everything within minutes.

What to expect

Three days of sawanobori — ascending a gorge by climbing the river itself, up waterfalls, through pools and over water-polished slabs in felt-soled tabi boots that grip wet rock uncannily well.

Expect to be wet and cold for most of each day, to use ropes on the bigger falls, and to push through forest so dense the streambed is the only practical line.

It is physically demanding and mentally committing: routes are unmarked, and once you are in a gorge, retreat is often impossible. The flash-flood risk is significant, so conditions upstream matter as much as your own climbing.

How to start

Go in the warmer months, June to September, when water levels and temperatures are workable, and go with a guide — this is not a self-organised outing.

The routes are unmarked, escape mid-gorge is frequently impossible, and rain falling upstream can transform a benign river within minutes, so local knowledge of the catchment is a safety essential, not a luxury. Come with rock-climbing basics and real cold tolerance already in place; guides expect it.

Felt-soled tabi boots and proper rope skills are part of the discipline. Book a sawanobori guide operating in the Tanigawa and Jōshin'etsu gorges well ahead.
