Why go

Tsurugi-dake is a black fang of rock above the Tateyama plateau and, among Japan's hundred famous mountains, the one with the darkest reputation — the last major peak in the country to be surveyed, and still widely called its most dangerous non-technical climb. There is no rope and no graded pitch. There is simply a great deal of exposure and a lot of old iron.

The standard Bessan ridge route saves its worst for near the top: the Kani-no-Tatebai, a near-vertical wall climbed on chains and a few bolts, and the Kani-no-Yokobai, a horizontal traverse across a cliff face where the first blind reach for a foothold is the move people remember. A helmet, sure feet and a head for heights are not optional here.

You start high, from the huts around Murodō, which shortens the mountain but not its seriousness. Toyama Prefecture asks climbers to file a plan for Tsurugi — confirm the current process before you travel.

What to expect

How to start

Climb in the short summer window, July to September, and start from the huts around Murodō — reached by the Tateyama–Kurobe route — which shortens the mountain but not its seriousness, basing at Tsurugi-sanso for the summit day.

Toyama Prefecture asks climbers to file a climbing plan for Tsurugi, so confirm the current submission process before you travel. Come with grip strength, exposure tolerance and solid scrambling experience; this is advanced-to-expert ground.

Wear a helmet, start early to clear the chained sections before crowds bank up on them, and watch the forecast — wet rock on those traverses is a different proposition.
