Why go

Few places offer a paragliding backdrop like Vík í Mýrdal on Iceland's south coast: a sweep of jet-black volcanic sand, the jagged Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the surf, green cliffs alive with puffins, and glaciers behind.

On a tandem flight, strapped in front of an experienced pilot, you launch from the coastal hills and soar over this surreal monochrome landscape, the Atlantic breaking black-and-white beneath you, with nothing to do but look.

It needs no experience and little effort — the pilot flies, you enjoy the view — so it's open to almost anyone, yet the setting makes it unforgettable.

Combining the thrill of flight with one of the most dramatic and photographed coastlines on earth, a tandem paraglide over Vík is a short, exhilarating highlight of any trip to the south, weather permitting.

What to expect

A tandem paragliding flight in which you're harnessed in front of a qualified pilot who launches, flies and lands the wing — you simply sit back and take in the view.

After a short run to take off from a coastal slope, you glide over the black-sand beach, sea stacks and cliffs, typically for ten to twenty minutes depending on conditions, sometimes with gentle turns and swoops.

It requires no skill or fitness beyond being able to jog a few steps at launch, so it suits beginners and children (with minimums), though nervous flyers should know it's an open, airy experience.

Crucially, it's entirely weather-dependent: wind and cloud frequently ground flights, and safe conditions can be fleeting, so flexibility is key. When the sky cooperates, floating over Vík's dramatic coast is a serene, spectacular thrill.

How to start

Flights run in the milder months, roughly May to September, and only in suitable wind and weather — so build in flexibility and don't pin it to a single day.

Book a tandem flight with a licensed paragliding operator working the Vík area; they provide everything and the pilot does all the flying, so no experience is needed. Wear warm layers, closed shoes you can jog a couple of steps in, and secure any loose items and glasses.

Be ready for the operator to postpone or cancel for wind — this is normal and a good sign of a safety-conscious pilot. Confirm minimum age and any weight limits when booking. Bring a camera or let the pilot film.

When conditions align, it's a short, unforgettable way to see one of Iceland's most iconic coastlines from the air.
