Epic7 days on the ground

Why go

Something in the geography of Hokkaido conspires to produce the lightest snow on earth. Cold, dry air pours off Siberia, crosses the Sea of Japan picking up moisture, and unloads it on the island as a relentless, feather-dry powder — fifteen metres or more over a season, falling in storm after storm from December through February.

You time a week to that cycle and tour the birch glades and dormant volcanoes around Niseko and Furano in snow that behaves less like snow than like smoke, floating rather than carving beneath you. Between days you sit in an outdoor onsen in the dark while it keeps piling up around you. Timing is the whole game, and January is the reliable month.

Much of the finest terrain is lift-accessed sidecountry, but anything beyond the ropes is true backcountry: carry avalanche gear, know how to use it, and give the tree wells and buried terrain the respect that all that snow demands.
