The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve covers the high Mackenzie Basin around Lake Tekapo and Aoraki / Mount Cook. Its gold-tier skies show the Milky Way core, the Southern Cross and the Magellanic Clouds, often with the aurora australis low on the horizon.
In season: Apr–Sep · Peak: Jun–Aug
Long, cold winter nights, guided tours at Mount John and in Tekapo, and hot pools under the stars. Clear nights are common but not guaranteed.
Base in Lake Tekapo or Aoraki / Mount Cook village and book a guided night-sky tour. Come in winter for the longest nights, around the new moon.
