NamibRand Nature Reserve protects a huge area of red dunes, grassland and mountains on the edge of the Namib Desert, far from any town. Its gold-tier dark sky makes the Milky Way cast shadows, seen from lodges and desert camps.
In season: Apr–Oct · Peak: Jun–Aug
Warm days and cold nights in the dry season, sleeping under the stars at some lodges, and guided astronomy sessions. It is remote and relatively expensive.
Book a lodge or camp inside the reserve, reached by road from Sesriem or by light aircraft. Combine it with the dunes of Sossusvlei, and go in the dry winter months.
