Why go

The Biebrza valley never got drained, which makes it the biggest intact marshland in this part of the world and one of Europe's great birding sites.

Spring flooding is the moment. Elk standing chest-deep in water, aquatic warblers in a habitat that barely exists anywhere else, great snipe lekking at dusk, and a dawn chorus across a landscape with no hard edges in it. You get around by kayak, by boardwalk, and by wading.

What to expect

Chest waders as standard kit, mosquitoes that are genuinely punishing from June, and zones that close during breeding season.

How to start

Park ticket required and some areas need a guide. April for the flood and the elk; May for the birds. Book a local guide — the good spots are not obvious.
