Why go

Białowieża is the most reliable place in Europe to see the European bison — the continent's largest land mammal — living free. Brought back from the brink of extinction in this very forest a century ago, the herds now range through the ancient woodland straddling the Polish-Belarusian border, and a guided outing at the right time of day gives genuinely good odds of finding them.

The forest is the other half of the experience. This is primeval lowland woodland, the last of its kind, and tracking bison through it — past enormous old oaks and standing deadwood, with woodpeckers drumming and the chance of wolf sign underfoot — is a window into what Europe looked like before people cleared it. A guide is required for the strictly protected core, and worth having anywhere for the reading of tracks.

Winter can concentrate bison around feeding sites, while the shoulder seasons are quieter and greener. Go with realistic expectations and a good guide, and the forest itself rarely disappoints.
