Why go

Białowieża is Europe's last great lowland primeval forest, a surviving fragment of the woodland that once blanketed the continent, and running its trails is a quiet, almost meditative outing rather than a lung-busting one. The ground is flat and forgiving, the paths soft, and the running easy enough to make it the perfect recovery day between harder trips.

What you're really here for is the forest itself. This is ancient woodland in the true sense — huge old oaks, standing deadwood left to rot as it naturally would, and a hush that comes from being somewhere genuinely undisturbed. Wild bison roam the wider forest, and while you're unlikely to run straight into one, knowing they're out there changes the feel of every kilometre.

The strictly protected core requires a guide, but the surrounding trails are open to run freely. Go gently, keep your eyes up, and treat it as much as a wildlife wander at pace as a workout. Few forests in Europe feel anything like this old.
