Caving in Śnieżnik

Jaskinia Niedźwiedzia at Kletno was found when quarrymen blew open a chamber system stuffed with the remains of cave bears that had died there over tens of thousands of years. It is the finest decorated cave in the country by a distance.

Above it, the Śnieżnik massif gives a long open ridge with a Czech border tower on top. Cave in the morning, ridge in the afternoon, and the drive out through the Kłodzko valley is worth the trip on its own.

The cave itself — Jaskinia Niedźwiedzia at Kletno — is visited only on a guided, fixed route with daily numbers capped, so this is a walk through lit, decorated chambers rather than any crawling or squeezing; families manage it comfortably.

It is the finest-decorated cave in Poland, and the chambers hold the bones of cave bears that died there over tens of thousands of years. Pair it with the Śnieżnik massif above, a long open ridge topped by a viewing tower, for a half-day on foot.

The cave stays cold year-round, so bring a layer even in summer.

Book tickets well in advance: daily visitor numbers are capped, slots sell out in season, and the cave closes for part of the winter while bats hibernate. Access is guided-only, so there is nothing to arrange beyond your timed entry — just arrive for your slot at Kletno.

Give yourself the rest of the day for the Śnieżnik ridge above and the drive out through the Kłodzko valley, both worth the trip on their own. Wear proper footwear and bring a warm layer for the cave. It is an easy weekend from Wrocław or Kraków by car.
