Why go

Dahab's kite spot is a large, flat, shallow lagoon — waist-deep a long way out — and that is close to the ideal classroom for learning to kitesurf. You can stand up and reset when it goes wrong, the wind is reliable through the season, and the whole set-up is far less intimidating than launching into open swell. Beginners progress here fast.

The town itself is the other half of the appeal: relaxed, cheap, and geared to weeks rather than days, with the same warm Red Sea and unhurried pace that draws divers. Plenty of schools line the lagoon, so lessons and gear are simple to arrange, and more advanced riders have wind and space to play once they've outgrown the shallows.

The windy season runs through the warmer months, so check the forecast — flat-water kiting depends entirely on it. For anyone wanting to learn the sport somewhere genuinely forgiving and fun, Dahab is very hard to beat.
