Rafting in the Pieniny

The Dunajec cuts a gorge along the Slovak border, and the flisacy have been poling wooden rafts down it for two centuries — a guild, with its own dress and its own rules about who gets to do it.

It is unashamedly a tourist tradition and it is also genuinely lovely: eighteen kilometres of limestone walls with the river doing the work. Walk up Trzy Korony the next morning and look straight down on the whole thing.

Not whitewater but a two-century-old tradition: the flisacy guild pole traditional wooden rafts down the Dunajec gorge along the Slovak border, in their own dress and by their own rules about who is allowed to do it.

It is unashamedly a tourist experience — scheduled and commercial rather than wild — and it is also genuinely lovely: eighteen kilometres of limestone walls with the river doing the work, calm enough for young children.

Pair it with a morning walk up Trzy Korony, whose summit platform looks straight down on the whole gorge, though the platform itself gets very busy. This is scenery and heritage at a gentle pace, not an adrenaline trip.

The rafts run to a seasonal timetable through the flisacy guild, roughly April to October, so check departure times rather than booking a private slot — you join a raft when one fills. No experience is needed and it suits families with even quite young children.

To combine it with Trzy Korony, walk up early in the morning to have the viewing platform to yourself before the crowds and the raft traffic build. Base in Sromowce or Szczawnica, the usual start and finish points.

Bring sun protection and a layer; the gorge holds shade and the river keeps things cool.
