Why go

Zakopane gives you proper alpine ski touring barely an hour from Kraków airport, which is a rare kind of convenience. Above the resort, the Tatras offer real skinning-and-skiing terrain — genuine vertical, alpine exposure, and the committing feel of a serious range — without the long approach or the expense of the western Alps.

The touring here earns respect. This is considerable avalanche terrain, steep and consequential, in a compact range where the weather changes quickly, so it rewards people who already tour and can manage a snowpack rather than beginners. The payoff is around 900 metres of climbing to earn descents in a striking high-mountain setting, with a warm town and its thermal baths waiting below at the end of the day.

The season runs from the depth of winter into spring. Carry full avalanche gear, check the local bulletin, and ideally go with someone who knows the range. For touring-experienced skiers, it's a great deal of mountain for very little travel.
