Why go

Babia Góra stands alone, which is why it makes its own weather and why the summit is bare rock and rime while the valleys below are in sun. Locals call the top Diablak and treat the mountain with a respect that visitors usually work out too late.

The Perć Akademików on the north side is the interesting way up: a marked scrambling route through rock steps that feels a long way from the Beskid meadows on the other side. It is the biggest thing in Poland outside the Tatras.

What to expect

Abrupt weather changes, a summit that is bare and exposed, and a north-face route that is genuinely steep.

How to start

Park fee at the trailheads. The Perć Akademików closes in winter and after heavy rain; check at the park office in Zawoja before committing to it.
