Why go

The Tatra high route is a marked trail in the way a via ferrata is a walk. Orla Perć is iron rungs and chain bolted into granite, one-way in summer because there is nowhere to pass, with a fatality list that gets recited every season.

Base at the Pięć Stawów hut and you can string it together properly: the ridge one day, Rysy the next for the highest point in Poland and a view straight down the Slovak side. Between them sits the whole main ridge, which is where the serious walkers spend their week.

This is the only place in Poland that will actually frighten you, and it is the reason Polish mountaineers exist.

What to expect

Exposure that would be graded in the Alps, a one-way system that commits you once you start, and afternoon storms that arrive fast.

How to start

Book Pięć Stawów months ahead — it is the hut that makes the whole route work. Go in August or early September for the most reliable rock.
