Why go

The Karkonosze ridge is a high, wind-scoured plateau with post-glacial cirques dropping away on the Polish side and a border running down the middle that you cross a dozen times a day. Śnieżka's summit building looks like a landed UFO and the wind up there is genuinely violent.

The huts are the reason to do it as a traverse rather than a day walk. Samotnia sits by a tarn in a cirque, Strzecha Akademicka has been feeding walkers for a century, and you can drink in all of them.

What to expect

A plateau with no shelter, weather that turns without warning, and winter avalanche closures in the cirques.

How to start

Park fee on both sides. Book the huts ahead in summer and at weekends; they are small and popular with Czech walkers too.
