Trekking in The Three Passes
Nepal
Eighteen days in the Khumbu taking the high circuit rather than the base camp highway.

The Karkonosze ridge is a high, wind-scoured plateau with post-glacial cirques dropping away on the Polish side and a border running down the middle that you cross a dozen times a day. Śnieżka's summit building looks like a landed UFO and the wind up there is genuinely violent.
The huts are the reason to do it as a traverse rather than a day walk. Samotnia sits by a tarn in a cirque, Strzecha Akademicka has been feeding walkers for a century, and you can drink in all of them.
In season: Jan–Mar, May–Oct
A plateau with no shelter, weather that turns without warning, and winter avalanche closures in the cirques.
Park fee on both sides. Book the huts ahead in summer and at weekends; they are small and popular with Czech walkers too.

The high route across Poland's only alpine terrain — chains, ladders, and the top of the country at 2,499 m.
TrekkingFrance
One hundred and seventy kilometres around the roof of the Alps, through three countries, sleeping in mountain huts.
