Patagonia is one of the last places on earth where you can realistically track wild pumas. Around Torres del Paine in particular, the big cats have become unusually visible — protected, well-studied, and hunting the vast guanaco herds across open country where, with a good guide and some patience, sightings are genuinely achievable in a way they almost never are elsewhere.
The setting lifts it further. You track at dawn beneath the granite towers of Paine, across a windswept landscape where condors ride the thermals and guanaco scatter at the scent of a cat, guided by trackers who know individual pumas on sight. Even a distant view of one moving through that country is the kind of wildlife moment people build an entire trip around.
Dawn is the time, a guide is essential, and the southern shoulder seasons often give the best mix of light and activity. Come for the pumas, but take the whole cast — condors, guanaco, the towers themselves — as part of the deal.
