Why go

Zakopane is Poland's mountain capital, and above it the High Tatras hold the country's only genuinely alpine rock climbing — multi-pitch granite routes with real exposure, high cirques, and the kind of committing position you normally have to travel to the Alps to find. It's a compact range, but it climbs far bigger than its modest height suggests.

What makes it special is the accessibility of that seriousness: proper alpine climbing an hour or so from Kraków airport, in a range with a deep mountaineering tradition and a lively town at its foot to descend to each evening. Routes run from moderate to hard, on solid granite in high, weather-exposed settings.

The season is short — summer, once the snow has cleared the upper faces — and Tatra weather turns fast, so an early start and a close eye on the forecast matter here. Come with alpine experience and the sense to retreat when needed; this is small but serious ground.
