Why go

The Wolf's Lair at Gierłoż was the main German headquarters on the eastern front, a camouflaged complex of massive bunkers hidden in the Masurian forest. Blown up by the retreating Germans, its broken slabs of concrete now lie tilted among the trees, while the army command bunkers at nearby Mamerki survived almost intact.

What to expect

Walking trails among the ruined bunkers with information boards, plus the far quieter Mamerki site with intact bunkers and a museum. Busy in summer; the forest and the sheer scale of the ruins make a strong impression in any season.
